Father's Day breakfast draws community crowd.

Byline: Jim Feehan The Register-Guard

WALTERVILLE - Even though it was "his" day, Willie Hansen didn't mind donning a chef's hat and apron apron,

The Deerhorn man flipped pancakes, fried eggs and served up sausage sausage, food consisting of finely chopped meat mixed with seasonings and, often, other ingredients, all encased in a thin membrane. Although sausages were made by the ancient Greeks and Romans, they were usually plain and unspiced; in the Middle Ages people began to  patties and ham slices to about 300 people at the annual Father's Day breakfast at the George Millican Community Hall in Walterville.

The father of three daughters said it's no hardship to work on Father's Day.

"I can't remember doing anything else but volunteering at the annual Father's Day breakfasts," he said. "Besides, I enjoy seeing people I don't get to see that often."

Built in 1932, the community hall serves as the Grange hall, as well as the meeting place for the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

But Sunday was devoted to all things dad. And to make dad feel at home, tables were festooned with safety goggles goggles,
n the protective eyewear worn by dental personnel and patients during dental procedures.

"Basically it's things that didn't sell at yesterday's yard sale," said organizer Denise Bishop of Deerhorn. "We would have put a lounge chair in here, but there would have been fights over that."

The fathers (and their families) who showed up came with their appetites - downing 60 pounds of sausage, 25 pounds of ham, 35 dozen eggs, 10 gallons of orange juice, three gallons of milk, three gallons of pancake pancake, thin, flat cake, made of batter and baked on a griddle or fried in a pan. Pancakes, probably the oldest form of bread, are known in different forms throughout the world.  syrup syrup /syr·up/ (sir´up) a concentrated solution of a sugar, such as sucrose, in water or other aqueous liquid, sometimes with a medicinal agent added; usually used as a flavored vehicle for drugs. , 30 pounds of pancake mix and three pounds of butter, Bishop said.

Few dads looked as pleased as Teiva White of Vida, who beamed with pride as he showed off his 6-month-old son, Jason.

"Waking up to the most wonderful smile in the world, you can't beat that," White said.

Moreover, Father's Day is the one day he doesn't have to worry about committing any crimes of fashion, said Teiva's wife, Shannon. "He can wear whatever he wants today," she said with a smile.
