Fast-track lab open for business.

Graf & Lewent Architects, a leading firm in the design of laboratory space, is pleased to have played a pivotal role in the creation of newly opened laboratory and office space at St. John's University in Queens.

The Graf & Lewent work included the design of approximately 3,000-s/f of existing space for use as a research pharmaceutical laboratory, a teaching biology laboratory and associated offices. The final result is attractive, inviting, user-friendly state-of-the-art facilities, a first step in the University's 20-Year Facilities Master Plan. The general contractor for the project was Scorcia & Diana Associates, Inc. of Floral Park, NY.

The project entailed the rehabilitation of existing laboratory and storage space on two levels of the University's massive 5-story Science Building. Graf & Lewent's new design included standard architectural elements such as floors, ceilings, walls, electric, lighting, heating and air conditioning, as well as laboratory specific items. Laboratory elements in the Graf & Lewent work comprised laboratory-grade casework, countertops, flooring surfaces and benchtop gas, water, air and vacuum plumbing, as well as personal safety shower and eye wash fixtures. The design of a photographic dark room for on-site microscopic image processing was also part of the Graf & Lewent design.
