San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden  saxophonist Harvey Wainapel will play at 9 p.m. Thursday at Sam Bond's Garage, 407 Blair Blvd.

Wainapel was named "one of the most promising and versatile players of his generation" by the 1998 All Music Guide to Jazz. He has performed with McCoy Tyner, Joe Lovano, Airto Moreira, Flora Purim, Jovino Santos Neto Jovino Santos Neto (born in 1954) is a Brazilian pianist and composer.

Santos Neto grew up in Realengo, a suburb of Rio de Janeiro, and studied classical piano from the age of 12.
 and Ray Charles.

His three CDs feature such players as Kenny Barron, Larry Grenadier, Kenny Wollesen, Mike Clark and the Metropole Met´ro`pole

Although Wainapel has been playing for some time, he has only recently begun to make a major impact. Originally from upstate New York Upstate New York is the region of New York State north of the core of the New York metropolitan area. It has a population of 7,121,911 out of New York State's total 18,976,457. Were it an independent state, it would be ranked 13th by population. , Wainapel studied at Berklee College of Music Berklee College of Music, founded in 1945, is an independent music college in Boston, Massachusetts, with many prominent faculty, staff, alumni, and visiting artists. It has an enrollment of approximately 3,900 students and a 2004 faculty of approximately 430.  for two years, during which time he recorded and performed at Carnegie Hall with vibist Gary Burton.

After a two-month tour of Tunisia, Wainapel stayed abroad, eventually settling in Europe for five years, including one year as a member of the German Radio Big Band in Frankfurt.

, Wainapel went on a 10-month world tour with singer Ray Charles, then moved to San Francisco, where he was nominated for two Bay Area Music Awards (as outstanding reed player and outstanding jazz musician).

Performing in Wainapel's trio in Eugene will be Portland drummer Alan Jones (who has played with John Abercrombie, Steve Coleman, Dave Holland) and Bay Area bassist John Wiitala (Bobby Hutcherson, James Moody, Jessica Williams).
