After reading "Bring back men in black" (Sounding Board, May) on the return of clerical garb, especially cassocks among younger priests, two thoughts immediately come to mind. First, a significant number of responses and comments seem to be self-centered: "I feel better because I see the priest in his cassock." The idea that it takes a police car sitting on the side of the road to slow one down doesn't wash when dealing with matters of living one's personal faith.

Second, in his homily homily (hŏm`əlē), type of oral religious instruction delivered to a church congregation. I am amazed that U.S. CATHOLIC is falling for the "bring back men in black" movement. The black suit, when worn in public, is not a sign of piety. It is a political statement: Let's go back to the wonderful days before Vatican II.

I grew up in that era. We laypeople lay·peo·ple or lay people  
pl.n.
Laymen and laywomen.
 were told, "Leave religion to the priests." Our job was to pray, pay, and obey. I am glad those days are gone. I really believe we are the church.

In my humble opinion, if you scratch a black suit, you find an anti-Vatican II priest.
