Fashion: PUMP UP THE VOLUME.

EVERY season there's a trend that wows on the catwalks but baffles high street fashionistas.

Bubble, cocoon cocoon: see pupa.  or egg - call it what you will, volume is this year's 'handle with care' style.

"The new silhouette is a modern change from the hippy chic look that lasted quite a few seasons," explains Elizabeth Cocozza, fashion director at Eve mag azine azine (ăz`ēn), IUPAC name for pyridine. .

"Some of the catwalk looks were extreme but the more tamed down versions will appear on the high street and be more wearable."

The volume trend is all about playing around with proportions.

Balance out your volume with fitted lines and you're on the right tracks to give Kate Moss some competition in the style stakes. But there are rules to follow.

"If you are an apple shape beware, the volume can be unflattering," Elizabeth warns, "and avoid a cocoon shape from the neck down unless you are slim.

"If you go for volume in a top keep the bottom narrow, and wear a more fitted top with a fuller skirt."

So how do you pull off the funky cocoon fashion with flair?

Don't try to belt a voluminous dress if it is meant to be worn loose, it will ruin the desired effect.

Keep legs long and slim with either opaque tights, leggings leg·ging

or skinny trousers to balance the shape.

Petites can be swallowed up by cocoon coats - keep shoulders neat and sleeves no longer than your wrist.

Make sure your voluminous skirt sits right on your waist. Low-slung will just look ill-fitting.

If you're worried about looking over-volumised, choose drapey fabrics to give volume minus the bulk.

But wallflowers take note: voluminous additions to your wardrobe are all about big, bold lines and puffed-up feminine shapes, so there's no hiding place No Hiding Place is a British television series produced by Associated-Rediffusion for the ITV network between 16th September 1959 and 22nd June 1967.

The series followed the cases of Detective Chief Superintendent Tom Lockhart (Raymond Francis) at Scotland Yard.
