Bartram was born in Kingsessing, Pennsylvania. He accompanied his father on many of his travels, to the Catskill Mountains and Florida, and was noted at a young age for the , America's first naturalist, and reads lie fiction in choosing a diary format to tell of William's childhood love of plants and the growth of his career by way of an early first discovery. A bibliography, biographical notes and engraving by Bartram support the educational side, while the sidebar diary format lends to information.
