Farewell to Somme survivor.


ONE of the last survivors of the Battle of the Somme in 1916 was cremated yesterday with full military honours.

The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders was an infantry regiment of the British Army formed in 1793.
 in full regalia played at the funeral of Robert Burns - who would have been 105 on Sunday Sunday: see Sabbath; week.  - in Wokingham, Berks.

 born Mr Burns was in the opening onslaught at the Somme when 57,540 were killed or wounded - the highest for one day in British military history.

When it ended four months later he was one of only 75 survivors from the 800-strong 7th Battalion battalion

Tactical military organization composed of a headquarters and two or more companies, batteries, or similar units and usually commanded by a field-grade officer such as a lieutenant colonel.

He kept a diary in the war but when it ended he sealed it in an envelope and it was left unopened for 67 years.
