Farewell to America's 'small-town hero'.


FORMER president Gerald Ford was honoured yesterday in a cathedral service attended by other American leaders of the 20th century.

Tributes were paid to Ford, who died on Boxing Day aged 93, by speakers including current president George Bush and Henry Kissinger, Ford's secretary of state.

Kissinger said: "Gerald Ford had the virtues of small town America."

Bush escorted Ford's widow Betty down the aisle of Washington Cathedral.

The Day of Mourning was a day of protest held by Aboriginal Australians on 26 January 1938, the sesquicentenary of British colonisation of Australia.

The service was attended by former president Bill Clinton and wife Hillary, former presidents George Bush snr and Jimmy Carter and vice-president Dick Cheney.
