WINCHESTER - Speaking publicly Saturday for the first time about the Sept. 14 gun battle that cost Douglas County Douglas County is the name of twelve counties in the United States:

 sheriff's Deputy Morris Taylor his life, the officer who was by Taylor's side during the split-second exchange said thank you.

But first, before more than 1,000 people who attended the public funeral, Cpl. Jeff Aalberg apologized - in case he couldn't finish.

"I might not be able to get the words out," Aalberg said, his voice breaking with emotion. "I'm here to say thank you for saving my life so my son still has a dad.

"There's no doubt in my mind that you are a hero. Just ask my little boy."

Aalberg was one of a half-dozen speakers at the funeral, held in a packed auditorium at Umpqua Community College Umpqua Community College (UCC) is a two-year public college located approximately five miles north of Roseburg, Oregon, United States. About 1,000 full-time students and 15,000 part-time students attend UCC. . Before the service, thousands of people gathered along the route of a procession of more than 100 patrol cars, fire trucks and medic medic: see alfalfa.  units driven by emergency workers from Oregon, Washington and California.

The procession, led by 15 motorcycle officers, began in downtown Roseburg and headed north through Winchester to the nearby community college.

    "He was a good man," Vaughn said.

    "There were a lot of people in the town of Drain who loved him, especially the elderly and the kids. He spent a lot of time helping the elderly with their needs and they counted on him."

    At the service, speakers stepped up to a lectern a short distance from Taylor's flag-draped coffin, flanked by officers from a statewide honor guard.

    Speakers repeatedly noted Taylor's ability to work with the public, recalling his willingness to skateboard with at-risk kids and show off a DARE car during anti-drug events at schools.

    "He was happy all the time, easy going," Capt. Ray Duncan said. "That's what made him such a good deputy, working so well with people, especially the kids. He was just easy to be around. Some people are that way."

    A devout Christian, Taylor prayed with his wife, Margaret, every morning.

As of August 2007 the church has an average weekly attendance of 2,800 adults. , said they prayed that Saturday morning before Taylor left for work.

    "He loved life, but his greatest passion was Jesus," Evans said. "He longed to be with him in heaven and today he is."

    Douglas County Sheriff Jim Main echoed the words of his men that Taylor was liked by everyone, saying he was the kind of guy who made you feel good just seeing him walk into a room.

    "He was big in spirit and big in his love for life," Main said. "There's no doubt that today Morris is walking hand-in-hand with God."

    Main said Morris was as much a hero as those who rushed into the World Trade Center on Sept. 11.

    "He was fearless and went forward with courage," Main said. "He confronted a man victimizing the citizens he swore to protect. A new star has been added to the heavens."
