Far more travel on Britain's trains.THE number of main line trains is only about 5% greater than 1994, yet they are carrying 60% more passengers, a rail industry strategy report said. Planned additional carriages are "desperately needed" on a system likely to have to accommodate a doubling in passengers over the next 30 years, the report added. Demand could even triple in the period beyond 2040, said Network Rail, train companies and rail freight operators. The report said it was vital to start planning for the future now.
