Hampson notes: "Our key winemaking challenge is grasping the unique characteristics and strengths of each site so that we can adjust our techniques to best emphasize its terroir Terroir (/tεʀwaʀ/ in French) was originally a French term in wine and coffee used to denote the special characteristics that geography bestowed upon them. ." The May releases include a Merlot from Suscol Ranch in Jameson Canyon in southern Napa Valley and a Zinfandel from Ponzo Vineyard, planted in the Russian River Valley before the Depression. In August, four vineyard-designated Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons will be released: Carpenter Vineyard in Coombsville and three vineyards in Oakville: Rock Cairn Vineyard, John C. Sullenger Vineyard, and Far Niente's estate property, Stelling Vineyard. Future releases will include more single-vineyard designations and other varietals, including Chardonnay, Syrah and Pinot Noir. Gil Nickel said: "It is the new challenges of unlocking great single-vineyard wines that has brought us to the decision to add a winery to complement Far Niente. Each will have its own style, but the lessons learned at one can only benefit the other." Far Niente Managing Director, Larry Maguire, summarized the reasons behind the new venture: "Beyond the charm and challenge, small lots will fill a growing desire by fine restaurants and select wine shops to discover new and exclusive products. Nickel & Nickel allows us to explore this exciting area without diluting our efforts at Far Niente, which has been so important to our success with its own distinctive 'house style.'"
