Far Eastern Group and AT&T consortium announces participation in Taiwan cellular phone license bid.


HONG KONG--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 30, 1996--The Far Eastern Group and AT&T today announced that their consortium, Far EasTone Telecommunications Communicating information, including data, text, pictures, voice and video over long distance. See communications.  Co., Ltd., has applied to The Ministry of Transportation and Communications to operate a cellular phone license in Taiwan.

AT&T, the world's largest cellular operator, has more than 6.8 million cellular subscribers around the world. In Asia, AT&T owns 27 percent of SmarTone's GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) A digital cellular phone technology based on TDMA that is the predominant system in Europe, but also used worldwide. In addition to the cellular expertise AT&T brings to Far EasTone, the consortium is strengthened by a strategic services agreement with SmarTone, the company that successfully launched the first GSM system outside of Europe in 1992, and has led the development of Hong Kong's competitive cellular market.
