Eugene is one of 12 "warm-up" dates for the Pixies before their European tour. They last played together on the 1992 ZOO TV tour as an opener for U2. The two Eugene shows are the only dates in Oregon. Founded in 1986, the Pixies melded punk noise with classic pop and indie guitar rock. The group's signature start-stop dynamics influenced countless bands including Nirvana nirvana (nērvä`nə), in Buddhism, Jainism, and Hinduism, a state of supreme liberation and bliss, contrasted to samsara or bondage in the repeating cycle of death and rebirth. , whose lead singer Kurt Cobain famously fa·mous·ly adv. 1. Because of the Pixies' short life-span and long-standing influence, many supporters, including Bresnitz, discovered the band after they split up. Those who waited in line for tickets for the Eugene shows ranged from teens to twentysomethings to Gen-Xers who may have caught the band during their last Eugene performance in 1989 at the Erb Memorial Union Ballroom. "They haven't played in 12 years, and they got even more popular once they broke up," said Abe Nielsen, a self-described "huge Pixies fan." Nielsen, booking agent at the WOW Hall, says there's a special connection between Eugene and the Pixies. The group's lead singer Black Francis, aka Frank Black, has played numerous shows without the Pixies in Eugene, including a surprise free show last year that drew an overflow crowd to Sam Bond's Garage. Black was rumored to have a romantic interest who lived in Eugene. "He's told me at shows that it (Eugene) is his favorite place to play," Nielsen said. "I didn't really ask why, I just said thank you."
