Fans cool on Lennon auction.

A NUMBER of John Lennon relics failed to sell at an auction of Beatles memorabilia.

Among the highly priced mementos that did not tempt buyers was a Phantom Vox organ guitar and his largest artwork, a mosaic called All Seeing Eye.

Although 70% of the items up for grabs were snapped up, the sale raised pounds 70,000 rather than the estimated pounds 700,000 because the more expensive items were not sold, Cooper Owen auctioneers said.

The prototype Vox organ guitar was presented to Lennon at a Beatles show in Hammersmith, London in 1964 and was expected to fetch up to pounds 140,000.

Bids reached pounds 90,000, but buyers were unable to match the reserve price.

The All Seeing Eye mosaic, installed in the pool at the mansion Lennon shared with his first wife Cynthia, was expected to sell for more than pounds 200,000 but bids only reached pounds 85,000.

A doodle by Lennon of ``floating clouds and a Hitler-like figure selling death cigs'' fetched pounds 7,000.

A page from one of his notebooks with handwritten lyrics to the song Steel & Glass was sold for pounds 15,000 and a signed job card from the Scaris & Brick waterworks in Liverpool in 1959 went for pounds 6,500.
