Gartland Foundry was founded by Peter V. Gartland in 1902. P. Gartland ran the business until his death in 1937 when it was taken over by his wife Delight. Producing gray iron castings for lawn mowers, typewriters, sewing machines sewing machine, device that stitches cloth and other materials. An attempt at mechanical sewing was made in England (1790) with a machine having a forked, automatic needle that made a single-thread chain. In 1830, B.  and electric motors with 150 employees, the foundry was lead by D. Gartland until 1951 when her son-in-law William M. Grimes (father of the current president) took over.

The elder Grimes established an environment for innovation at the plant, pushing the foundry to improve production and environmental practices. Today, the foundry is lead by his sons William G. and David, vice president of finance. The firm's focus is the electric motor industry, which represents 60% of its castings.

The ISO recognition was awarded to Gartland Foundry in July. ISO 9001:2000 recognition underscores Gartland's knowledge and understanding of its customers and its use of a quality system that is capable of assuring those requirements are met," said William G. Grimes.
