Shy and unassuming, Mayes shared little of his adventures overseas, just saying it was great to be home. His wife greeted him with a dozen roses and squeezed him tightly. "It's awesome, outstanding," she said. Asked the best part of having her husband home, she joked: "Now I don't have to do the yard. I don't have to wash the truck." Karamanos, a camouflage backpack slung over his shoulder, said he and his company were shot at "a couple of times, but nothing major." With a roll of his eyes, he said going to war was "interesting." On a more serious note, he said the "daily drudgery of war" takes a toll, and he's glad his stay in Iraq was a short one. Mayes will soon depart for North Carolina North Carolina, state in the SE United States. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean (E), South Carolina and Georgia (S), Tennessee (W), and Virginia (N). "And I thank you for welcoming us back." Terrie Karamanos said she never expected the good fortune to have her son be just 100 miles down the freeway when he joined the Marines. And she never expected to have him end up so far away, and in such danger, if even for a short time. Andy Karamanos just looked on proudly and said: "It's part of the job description."
