Fallen service members get tax relief. (FTB News).

Although the state has not conformed to the federal Victims of Terrorism Tax Relief Act of 2001, a service members entire tax liability is forgiven for the year in which they died and for any earlier tax year beginning with the year of service in a combat zone, if the above requirements apply.

If they are serving outside of the combat zone and if the service member qualified for special pay due to hostile or imminent danger, or if their service was in direct support of an operation within a combat zone, the tax forgiveness also applies. And, the tax liability also is forgiven for military or civilian U.S. employees who die from wounds or injuries incurred in a terrorist or military action outside the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. .

Under the California Combat Zone Extension (R&TC secs. 18570 and 18571) the deadline to file such returns, or a refund TO REFUND. To pay back by the party who has received it, to the party who has paid it, money which ought not to have been paid.
