J In the 1890s the world was changing, but not for the three Beckett children on a farm in rural Illinois, until a letter arrives from their aunt Euterpe in Chicago. The letter contains four train tickets to Chicago and an invitation to visit her so they can attend the World's Columbian Exposition World's Columbian Exposition, held at Chicago, May–Nov., 1893, in commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus. Authorized (1890) by Congress, it was planned and completed by a commission headed by Thomas W. . Parsons not only reads but also sings in this award-winning children's novel. She captures in her voice the excitement and wonder of this journey for the children, as well as the energy and exuberance of their grandfather as he too visits the fair and is reacquainted with Buffalo Bill Buffalo Bill, 1846–1917, American plainsman, scout, and showman, b. near Davenport, Iowa. His real name was William Frederick Cody. His family moved (1854) to Kansas, and after the death of his father (1857) he set out to earn the family living, working for . The intertwining of the historical along with the humorous is beautifully accomplished by Peck, who reads an afterword with detailed information about the 1893 Exposition.
