This year's list of Web site developers ranges in size from 4 to 85 developers. Last year's top firm had 140 local developers, the smallest company had 30. Of the seven companies returning this year, all reported a drop-off in staff.

The largest Web developer is Genex (last year's No. 2), with 95 employees in L.A. and 110 company-wide. Last year, Chicago-based MarchFirst marchFIRST, Inc. was a short-lived international systems integrator and internet consulting company at the tail end of the dot-com boom. marchFIRST was a Nasdaq traded public company whose peak stock price reached $52.  topped the list with 140 employees in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. , 7,600 worldwide.
