Faculty musicians, campus groups take stage at UO.

Cellist Steven Pologe Steven Pologe is an American cellist. He is the associate professor of cello at the University of Oregon School of Music and cellist with both the Oregon String Quartet and Trio Pacifica.  

Today, Beall Hall

Cellist Steven Pologe will give a Faculty Artist Series recital today.

UO SCHOOL OF MUSIC

Assisted by violinist Kathryn Lucktenberg and pianists David Riley and Victor Steinhardt, Pologe will perform `Conversations for Violin and Cello' by David Ott David Ott (born 1947) is an American composer of classical music.

Born in Crystal Falls, Michigan, Ott's works include the Annapolis Overture, written for the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, and various pieces of children's music.
, `Cellango for Cello and Piano' by Steinhardt and sonatas by Samuel Zyman and Sergei Rachmaninoff.

Pologe joined the UO faculty in 1993 after serving as principal cellist of the Honolulu Symphony, cellist of the Honolulu Symphony String Quartet and faculty member of the University of Hawaii (body, education) University of Hawaii - A University spread over 10 campuses on 4 islands throughout the state.

He currently is cellist for the Oregon String Quartet The Oregon String Quartet is a resident ensemble of the University of Oregon School of Music. It is made up of:

  • Fritz Gearhart, violin
  • Leslie Straka, viola
  • Steven Pologe, cello
 and Trio Pacifica, a principal cellist with the Oregon Bach Festival The Oregon Bach Festival is an annual celebration of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, held in Eugene, Oregon in late June and early July. It was co-founded by German conductor Helmuth Rilling and the former president of the American Choral Directors Association, Royce Saltzman, , and a regular soloist and chamber artist with the Grand Teton Music Festival Located in Jackson Hole at the gateway to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, the Grand Teton Music Festival offers seven weeks of classical music concerts each summer. The Festival Orchestra is the centerpiece of Grand Teton Music Festival's programming. .

The recital is at 3 p.m. today in Beall Concert Hall, 961 E. 18th Ave. Tickets, at the door, are $9 general admission, $5 for students and senior citizens.

Sospiro

Today, Collier House

Sospiro, a new vocal ensemble of 10 graduate students at the UO School of Music, will give a free concert today.

Sospiro focuses on repertoire of the 12th century to the late Renaissance and also on works by UO composers, such as Katie Saxon, Jeremy Jennings, Jerry Hui and Paul Hembree.

The concert is at 6:30 p.m. at Collier House, 1170 E. 13th Ave.

Jazz Cafe

Today, Music School Room 178

The music school's Jazz Cafe presents an evening of jazz combos in a cabaret setting today.

Five student combos, including a guitar ensemble, will perform, including music by Thad Jones, Victor Feldman, Sam Rivers, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter.

Student compositions and arrangements also will be on the program.

The cabaret begins at 8 p.m. today in Room 178 of the music school, 961 E. 18th Ave. Tickets, available at the door, are $5, or $3 for students and senior citizens. Light refreshments will be available for purchase.

Monday, Beall Hall

Clarinetist Wayne Bennett and other music faculty will give a Faculty Artist Series recital on Monday.

Chamber Music on Campus

Tuesday, Collier House

Chamber Music on Campus returns Tuesday for the first of two fall concerts featuring UO music students.

Selections include excerpts from `Pierrot Lunaire' by Arnold Schoenberg; Maurice Ravel's `String Quartet in F'; `Tarantelle' for flute, clarinet and piano by Camille Saint-Saens; `Bachianas Brasileiras' for flute and bassoon bassoon (băsn`), double-reed woodwind instrument that plays in the bass and tenor registers. Its 8-ft (2.4-m) conical tube is bent double, the instrument thus being about 4 ft (1.  by Heitor Villa-Lobos; `Six Bagatelles' for wind quintet by Gyorgy Ligeti; and `Canon for Brass' by UO student Matthew Ertz.

The concert begins at 8 p.m. in Collier House, 1170 E. 13th Ave. Admission is free.

Campus Orchestra

and Campus Band

Tuesday, Beall Hall

The UO Campus Orchestra and Campus Band will give a free joint concert Tuesday.

The band, led by Erica Drake, will play `In the Bleak Midwinter' by Gustav Holst, `With Quiet Courage' by Larry Daehn, `Vesuvius' by Frank Ticheli and `Sleigh sleigh: see sled.  Ride' by Leroy Anderson. The orchestra, led by Dijana Ihas, will play Antonio Vivaldi's `Concerto for Strings in A Major,' P.I. Tchaikovsky's `Andante an·dan·te   Music
