Within days of the Boston Massacre Boston Massacre, 1770, pre-Revolutionary incident growing out of the resentment against the British troops sent to Boston to maintain order and to enforce the Townshend Acts. The troops, constantly tormented by irresponsible gangs, finally (Mar. , an engraving engraving, in its broadest sense, the art of cutting lines in metal, wood, or other material either for decoration or for reproduction through printing. In its narrowest sense, it is an intaglio printing process in which the lines are cut in a metal plate with a  of the shooting, made by patriot Paul Revere Revere, city (1990 pop. 42,786), Suffolk co., E Mass., a residential suburb of Boston, on Massachusetts Bay; settled c.1630, set off from Chelsea and named for Paul Revere 1871, inc. as a city 1914.  (from another artist's work), was used to rally colonists against British rule. But in some key ways, the engraving inaccurately depicts the incident.

How does Revere's engraving differ from what actually happened? To find out, compare Jonathan Austin's eyewitness An individual who was present during an event and is called by a party in a lawsuit to testify as to what he or she observed.

The state and Federal Rules of Evidence, which govern the admissibility of evidence in civil actions and criminal proceedings, impose requirements
 account (see pp. 17-18) of the shooting to Revere's engraving (see p. 17). Use the questions below to help you find any differences and similarities between both versions. Organize and write your answers in the circles appropriately labeled. Insert any facts that both versions share in the middle section.

Revere's engraving

Preston ordered his men to fire. (He is standing at rear, with the sword.) The soldiers stood apart from the colonists, The colonists had no weapons. The weather was clear. The soldiers were not threatened. The soldiers were completely at fault.

Both versions

The shooting happened at night. [Note moon, upper left of picture.] There were eight soldiers, including Preston. The soldiers had muskets with bayonets.

9. Crispus Attucks Crispus Attucks (c. 1723 – March 5, 1770), was the first of five people killed in the Boston Massacre. He has been frequently named as the first martyr for the cause of American Independence and is the only person of the five killed whose name is commonly remembered. , a runaway slave. There is no black man in the engraving.
