Facial Expressions.

FACIAL EXPRESSIONS. Gary Faigin. New York: Watson-Guptill Publications, 1990. 288 pp., hardbound, $35.00.

A comprehensive and successful effort to provide the aspiring artist or art student with insight on portraying facial expression. This is not a "how to." It is a profusely illustrated book with anatomical diagrams, masterworks of paintings and sculpture, cartoons, photographs and hundreds of drawings by the author, a painter and printmaker who teaches at the Art Students League, Parsons and the National Academy of Design. The many illustrations, complemented with thoughtful text, lead the reader through three areas of study: The Structure of the Head, The Muscles of Expression and The Six Basic Expressions. In the latter, the "basic" expression, joy, has fourteen subheadings ranging from "abashed smiles" to "uproarious laughter." A worthwhile acquisition for readers ranging anywhere from middle school students through professional illustrators.
