Fabulously mysterious Emma Roberts: who is she really? It won't be an easy one to crack, but GL is on the case.

it's a tough assignment. We've got four pages to fill and only 15 minutes on the phone with Emma Roberts. With such a tight time frame, we know we'll have to do some fast talking to Noun 1. talking to - a lengthy rebuke; "a good lecture was my father's idea of discipline"; "the teacher gave him a talking to"
lecture, speech

rebuke, reprehension, reprimand, reproof, reproval - an act or expression of criticism and censure; "he had to

as Addie on Nickelodeon's Unfabulous is surprisingly guarded once her publicist puts her on the line. It doesn't help that the connection is so lousy. "I can't hear you. You're cutting in and out," Emma keeps saying.

Still, we're trying really, really hard to build up a rapport with the girl whose face graces the cover of the magazine you're now holding. But while she is polite, her responses to our questions are quite succinct. The conversation feels more like an interrogation--and our subject is holding back.

But we're down with it and figure we can make like Emma's most recent character--Nancy Drew. The upcoming movie of the same name is based on the classic books about the infamous teen sleuth. When we ask Emma to give up some of the film's backstory back·sto·ry

, her answer is as concise as the rest: "She unravels a Hollywood mystery." Uh-huh. And that's what we're about to do ....

WHAT SHE SAYS

"I live in California."

WHAT SHE MEANS

"Hollywood runs through my veins."

Acting is ingrained in Emma Roberts' family lineage. Her father is character actor Eric Roberts (DOA (jargon) DOA - Dead on arrival. A piece of hardware that has never worked. : Dead or Alive), who is the brother of Julia Roberts. And it doesn't take a trained investigator to figure out exactly what that means. Yes, Emma is the niece of the Oscar-winning star of such modern classics as Pretty Woman, Steel Magnolias and Erin Brockovich. "She's just, like, my aunt to me," Emma says, clearly less than impressed with Aunt Julia's superstar status. "I mean, I don't think of her as what other people see her as."

Emma hasn't yet reached the level of Hollywood-elite that her aunt has, but then again, Julia Roberts didn't kick off her career at age 9. That's how old Emma was when she landed her first part, in a movie titled Blow. And while you probably haven't seen the film due to its violent nature, you're surely familiar with her co-stars. Emma was the daughter of the characters played by A-listers Johnny Depp John Christopher Depp II[1] (born June 9 1963) is an American actor. Biography

 and Penelope Cruz.

WHAT SHE SAYS

"I just had my Sweet 16."

WHAT SHE MEANS

"My birthday party was a major blowout!"

"It was so much fun," Emma tells us. "It didn't really have a theme, but it was really cool. I had photo booths and a DJ." Sounds nice enough. But our first hint that Emma's b-day bash was a major social gala comes while conducting an interview with Max Thieriot Maximillion Drake Thieriot (born October 14 1988) is an American actor.

"I have a group of famous friends."

Of course, Max has already clued us in about Emma's affiliation with the girls of California's Gov. Schwarzenegger and his journalist wife Maria Shriver Maria Owings Shriver (pronounced: /'ʃɹaɪvɚ/) (born November 6, 1955) is an American journalist and the wife of California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and, as such, the First Lady of California. . Christina and Katherine are their names. "The younger one is my best friend," Emma confesses. Still, she's not giving up much more than that. "Yeah, we went to school together. Middle school." Another snapshot from Emma's party reveals that Alyson Michalka, one-half of singing sister-duo My & AJ, was at the shebang.

We get her talking about that little gem of a mermaid movie she co-starred in a few years back with pop singer/songwriter JoJo and Sara Paxton of Discovery Kids' Darcy's Wild Life Darcy's Wild Life is a television series on Discovery Kids and Family. "Which girls?"

"From Aquamarine."

"The Aquamarine girls? Oh, yeah. I talk to Sara sometimes. I talk to JoJo once in a while. Not as much as I would like, but that's because we're always busy and sometimes out of town."

WHAT SHE SAYS

"I have so much stuff in my purse."

WHAT SHE MEANS

"I'd rather be reading."

"I have the heaviest purse ever," Emma tells us. "I carry around my BlackBerry, of course. I carry around hand sanitizer sanitizer

Aha! She really does keep a book on her at all times. It is comforting to learn that, as a spokesperson for the Drop Everything and Read (dropeverything-andread.com) and Get Caught Reading movements (getcaughtreading.org), Emma truly digs reading. "I read, like, a book a week," she insists. "I've read the A-List novels. I love that series."

She confesses she'd never cracked a Nancy Drew book before getting the title role. "But I'm reading a bunch right now," she says. "People keep giving them to me as presents. I think they're cute. They're funny because they were written a long time ago, so the lingo's kind of different. But I like it a lot. Yeah, I just love to read in general.

"WHAT SHE SAYS"

I would love to do more music."

WHAT SHE MEANS

"My acting career is about to take off. "We go to amazon.com to review "Emma Roberts' List of Music You Should Hear." It's hard not to notice that she plugs her own CD Unfabulous and More at the tippy-top of her must-listen list, so we feel it's crucial to ask her about her music.

"Yeah, what about it?" she answers. "Are you going to be doing any recording in the near future?" "I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

. As I get older, I'd love to do more music, and I think that'd be really fun. But not right now. I'm kind of just focusing on acting and stuff."

"Word on the street is that you have a movie coming up called Rodeo Gal. Is that a rumor, or is that true?"

"That's kind of in the process of being developed," she tells us. "So it's not happening right this second, but it probably will soon. Hopefully."

"What about summer? Do you have any big plans?" we forge on.

"I don't know yet. I think I might be going out of town. I'm not sure." We get Emma's publicist on the phone, and we shake him down for more info. "We're about to do a big movie," he says. "We can't quite say yet, but I'll let you know in the next day or two. But she'll be filming this summer."

Later in the week, he shoots us over an e-mail: "Emma has been set to star in Wild Child. It's the story of a 16-year-old, out-of-control Malibu princess who is sent to a strict all-girls English boarding school by her father. While there, she embarks on a journey of self-discovery. It is a fantastic script, and we are very excited about it."

Ya know what else is exciting? Emma was recently deemed Female Star of Tomorrow at ShoWest, the annual film industry convention. If it's any kind of a good-omen indicator, last year's honoree was Jennifer Hudson Jennifer Kate Hudson (born September 12, 1981) is an Academy Award-winning American actress and singer. WHAT SHE SAYS

"I just drove to Starbucks."

WHAT SHE MEANS

"When am I getting a car?"

When we spoke with Emma, she had just gotten a learner's permit. She'd been driving her mom's car, with her mom in the passenger seat as required by law.

Emma's 16th birthday was swell and all, but it didn't end with the grand finale one might expect. There was no shiny spankin'-new SUV parked outside with a fat ribbon wrapped around it. No, she did not get a set of wheels.

We think it might be a sore subject, but we ask her anyway: "Emma, do you think you'll get a car anytime soon?"

"Excuse me?"

"Are you getting a car?"

Silence. "Probably not."
