FUNERAL HELD FOR OFFICER : FAMILY'S LAWYER CONTESTS VERSIONS OF FATAL SHOOTING.

Byline: Dennis Love Daily News Staff Writer

The mausoleum mausoleum (môsəlē`əm), a sepulchral structure or tomb, especially one of some size and architectural pretension, so called from the sepulcher of that name at Halicarnassus, Asia Minor, erected (c.352 B.C.  vault was scarcely sealed Tuesday at the interment of Los Angeles police Officer Kevin Gaines when the debate resumed over the still-murky circumstances of his shooting death March 18 by another officer.

Gaines, 31, was shot by on-duty narcotics Detective Frank Lyga, 40, on Cahuenga Boulevard near Lankershim Boulevard in Studio City after what Lyga says was a traffic confrontation. Investigators have said Gaines and Lyga were unaware they both were police officers.

After the service, an attorney working with Johnnie L. Cochran Jr.'s law firm to represent the Gaines family said there were ``inconsistencies'' in police accounts, physical evidence and civilian accounts.

Attorney Shawn Chapman said Cochran's investigators have located eyewitnesses whose stories do not necessarily corroborate To support or enhance the believability of a fact or assertion by the presentation of additional information that confirms the truthfulness of the item.

spokesman Officer Eduardo Funes said the shooting remains under investigation.

Gaines' funeral was attended by about 500 people, including LAPD Chief Willie L. Williams Willie L. A police veterans' honor guard supplied a 21-gun salute and ``Taps,'' as uniformed officers stood in formation, some wiping away tears. And the presence of Williams was duly noted, as the chief had indicated earlier that he would be unable to attend due to a conflicting Police Commission meeting.

Gaines was remembered as ``an officer, a gentleman, and a friend,'' by Capt. Lyman Doster of Pacific Division, who remarked upon Gaines' ``charming smile'' and competitive nature.

Doster referred to reports that Gaines had had a confrontation Aug. 16 with officers from the North Hollywood Division who were called to his house to investigate a report of gunfire.

``You've heard some comments about his past performance,'' Doster said. ``(But) he was about love. He approached his job with love.''
