FUND-RAISING FIRM TO GIVE UNIVERSITY CENTER BOOST.

VALENCIA - The University Center at College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  might be built sooner than expected with the help of a national fund-raising company.

As part of the college's master plan, a permanent University Center is planned to accommodate 70 bachelor's, master's and doctorate degree candidates with work being completed on the local campus.

Various partnerships have been established to help get the permanent center going, including one with the William S. Hart Union High School District to fund one floor and a proposed partnership with the U.S. Department of Commerce that would establish a business incubator Business incubators are organizations that support the entrepreneurial process, helping to increase survival rates for innovative startup companies. Entrepreneurs with feasible projects are selected and admitted into the incubators, where they are offered a specialized menu of  project on the second floor, with the third to be used by the college.

A campaign to raise the $10 million required for the center has been successful in garnering $6 million, in donations from individuals, businesses, corporations and foundations, revenue from Measure C and a use-tax partnership with the city of Santa Clarita. Foundation officials hope to speed the process with some professional help and have submitted a proposal to hire the fund-raising firm of Netzel Associates Inc. to pursue the final $4 million for approval at Wednesday's meeting.

According to documents presented with their proposal, Netzel has a success rate of 98.8 percent.

For its efforts, Netzel will receive $130,000 in fiscal 2004-05, with an option to extend the contract into the next fiscal year. By working with Netzel, the foundation's goal is to complete the campaign in July.

Wednesday's meeting is a joint gathering with the Associated Student Government and will be held at 2:30 p.m. in the staff dining room of the college's student center.
