FUND-RAISER FOR FIRE STATION SUPPORTERS ORGANIZE A BLOCK PARTY.

Byline: Daily News

SHERMAN OAKS - Hundreds of residents enjoyed a block party Saturday to benefit local firefighters, taking in the sounds of a live band and the sight of a 100-foot ladder firetruck at the first Benefit for Our Bravest event.

``Firetrucks and little kids. They just go together,'' said Ed Elliot, whose 18-month-old grandson Grandson (gräNsôN`), Ger. Grandsee, town (1990 pop. 2,473), Vaud canton, W Switzerland, at the southwestern end of the Lake of Neuchâtel. , Trent, got to sit in the driver's seat driv·er's seat

The prospect of rain and the cool weather did not deter hundreds from coming to the event at Sherman Oaks Avenue and Dickens Street.

Major sponsors for the fund-raiser for fire facilities and emergency equipment included the Valley Inn Restaurant, the Flagg Foundation and Los Angeles Family Magazine. Organizers said they raised at least $30,000 from the event, through donations and a silent auction. The money will be donated to the Adopt-A-Fire-Station Foundation.

More than a good cause, the event provided the spectacle of the shiny red big-rig ladder truck, a 1995 Simon Duplex LPI (Lines Per Inch) The number of lines printed in a vertical inch.

``Oh, fun,'' Elliot said. ``This is nice.''

Also Saturday, firefighters presented Marge Hearn, the widow of Hall of Fame broadcaster Chick chick

Firefighters shared with participants their stories and answered questions about the trucks.

``We like having the community come out here and meet us,'' said three-year firefighter Kelly Hoss, who attested at·test

Hoss is from Sherman Oaks Station 88, and he drives at the tail-end of the ladder truck as a tillerman - in a square cagelike box known as ``the bucket.''

``It's not that hard,'' he said. ``You just have to avoid large objects.''

Hoss is one of 993 L.A. firefighters stationed at one of the 103 firehouses across the city. The trucks get a lot of use - last year alone, the LAFD responded to 653,505 calls across the city.
