Postal worker A postal worker is one who works for a post office, such as a mail carrier. In the U.S., postal workers are represented by the National Postal Mail Handlers Union - NPMHU and the American Postal Workers Union, part of the AFL-CIO.  Marva Golden delivers holiday packages to the doors and mailboxes of the residents along her route every year. On Friday, Golden and about 15 other postal workers made a side trip to bring gifts to the North Hollywood Children and Family Services Center for children in foster or group homes.

``We want to give kids who are deprived something they want for a change,'' said Golden, who bought a Walkman, dolls and a CD player for four children. ``And it's special with kids who don't have very much . . . We all felt like Santa.''

and Burbank collected about 1,200 toys, matching them to a list the center put together from the children. A fleet of six postal trucks brought the gifts to the center Friday morning.

Santa and his helpers - volunteer postal workers and the center's employees in Santa hats - unloaded the trucks full of basketballs, Elmos, Legos and other toys to be distributed to the children who live in foster homes and group homes, said Donna Haas, Assistant Regional Administrator of Children and Family Services.

``There are so many children who are needy need·y

  • Robert A. Swanson, cofounder of Genentech, a biotech company
  • Bob Swanson (driver), an Indianapolis 500 and midget car driver

, the gift-giving effort was inspired by a similar program at the Palmdale Post Office.

``I thought it was the greatest thing in the world, and I thought it could blossom in the Valley,'' said Swanson.

Swanson hopes to expand the program to include 10 more post office branches and double the number of toys to be given next year.

``I was totally surprised by the response,'' he said.
