MAMMOTH MOUNTAIN Mammoth Mountain is a large lava dome complex[1] that lies to the west of the town of Mammoth Lakes, California in the Inyo National Forest.

Mammoth Mountain has a solution - The Family Center that opened for the first time this winter. The best part is, it's free for those aged 4 to 14. Just call ahead (1-800-MAMMOTH) and make a reservation for the new service. The center is located upstairs at the Mountain Center at the new Village at Mammoth mammoth, name for several large prehistoric elephants of the extinct genus Mammuthus, which ranged over Eurasia and North America in the Pleistocene epoch. .

 meet you. Then you just walk across the sky-bridge to the Village Gondola for a free ride to the slopes. Each family gets one agent assigned to help with all their needs and there's no standing in line. Couches, games and a big screen TV give the center a family-room feeling.

Eric Janisse, manager of the Mountain Center, says the computer reservation system is based on the one at the Sierra Star golf course. Just be sure to call ahead to reserve your free family ski ``tee time.''

 has also revamped its children's programs to make them more family friendly. Children who participate in ski school A ski school is an establishment that trains skiers. The modern version of the ski school was invented by the Austrian ski pioneer Hannes Schneider in the early 1920s when he formalized instruction methods and established these methods as teaching principles for all ski instructors  lessons now get a free lift ticket. This season, lessons for 7-12 year olds run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and include lunch. This provides parents more runs on their own and allows instructors extra time to work with the children.

Younger skiers, depending on experience and ability, can take the ``Intro to Snow'' or ``I Can Do It'' programs for 4 to 6 year olds from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. or take a two-hour lesson.

Helmets are required for children 4-12 participating in Sports School activities. They can be purchased or rented for $6 per day.
