FULLBACK DIVE LIFTS AVENGERS L.A. EDGES WINLESS TEAM ON LAST PLAY AVENGERS 65, NEW YORK 61.

Byline: Ross Siler Staff Writer

From the middle of a giant mass of bodies, Kevin Clemens looked first at his feet in the end zone, then at the far-side official signaling touchdown, and knew the Avengers had secured yet another last-second victory.

The 270-pound fullback needed a second, then third push, but finally plowed the 1 yard the Avengers needed to defeat the winless New York Dragons The New York Dragons are an Arena Football League team who were formed in 1995 as the Iowa Barnstormers. In 2001, the team relocated to New York. They currently play in the Eastern Division of the National Conference.  65-61 as time expired Sunday at Nassau Coliseum.

The Avengers had lost their two previous games.

``I have no idea how many guys hit me,'' Clemens said. ``I just buried my head and knew I had to get in the end zone. When I got up, I was like, `Whew whew

For the third time this season, the Avengers (4-2) won on their last play of the game. But Clemens' touchdown came by the finest of margins. From his vantage point on the 10-yard line, Avengers coach Ed Hodgkiss Ed Hodgkiss is an Arena Football League coach for the Los Angeles Avengers.  wasn't even sure his fullback made it.

``The pile clogged up, but I could see Kevin was on his feet,'' Hodgkiss said. ``The whole time I was just looking for Looking for

At the end of a wild offensive game, in which the two teams combined to score on 19 of 21 possessions and traded the lead six times in the fourth quarter, the Avengers once again expertly managed the clock in the final minute to come up with the victory.

Quarterback Tony Graziani Anthony Robert Graziani (Born:December 23, 1973, in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States) is a current Arena Football League quarterback for the Philadelphia Soul. He previously played in the NFL from 1997-2000 and NFL Europe in 2000.  (22 of 33, 355 yards, eight touchdowns) drove the Avengers to the goal line, and the team relied on Clemens' brute force (programming) brute force - A primitive programming style in which the programmer relies on the computer's processing power instead of using his own intelligence to simplify the problem, often ignoring problems of scale and applying naive methods suited to small problems directly  to cover the last 36 inches. Clemens, who suffered a concussion only a week ago, got the call instead of regular fullback Mathias Vavao, who was out with a dislocated dis·lo·cate

The Dragons, meanwhile, were without their two starting linebackers for the final play, and Hodgkiss chose to run directly at them instead of settling for a game-tying field goal. Hodgkiss added that the thought of winning for the first time in three games did not enter into his decision.

``We'd make the same call no matter what our record,'' Hodgkiss said. ``If we were on the 5-yard line, it would have been a different story. But we had 1 foot to go, and I have confidence in this team.''
