Remarkably, Hernandez was fighting the effects of a virus - which caused him to vomit three times earlier in the morning. ``I wasn't feeling too good,'' Hernandez said. ``I planned to go out faster but I had to change my plans and hold back because of the cold.'' While Hernandez was the individual winner, Moorpark's victory came from a solid team effort. ``One of the keys in coaching is to have all your runners have their best performance in the most important event,'' said coach Manny Manny may refer to: In nobility:

Pasadena easily defeated Moorpark in two previous meets this season, with the Raiders missing one of their top runners in each meet. At the Gold Coast Invitational in September, Moorpark finished third behind Pasadena and El Camino without No. 2 runner Francisco Sandoval, who missed the race to attend a funeral. It was a different story with Moorpark at full strength Saturday. ``We knew we had a chance with our whole team,'' said sophomore Jesus Villavicencio. ``Our biggest goal was to score under 100 points. We figured the meet was going to be decided by one point. We were very surprised.'' Sandoval finished sixth in 20:52, followed by Villavicencio and Cortes in 20th and 21st in 21:22 and 21:23. The Raiders' fifth runner, Sabino Beltran, finished 32nd in 21:36 after moving up 14 places in the final mile. Moorpark's sixth and seventh runners, Danny Oliva and T.W. Burchmore, were 40th and 69th in 21:42 and 21:59, respectively, out of more than 200 runners. ``I think our kids held their emotion,'' Trevino said. ``They ran the first mile disciplined and did not panic. Sometimes it's easy to get excited and go out too fast.'' Hernandez passed through the first mile in 4:50, trailing a pack of about 15 runners before taking the lead at 1-1/2 miles on a downhill stretch to open a 20-second advantage at the halfway point. ``They were on my back and then I made my move,'' Hernandez said. ``After that, I only heard people cheering for me.'' Saturday's victory improved his record to 5-1 against Galindo and helped erase memories of last year's race when Hernandez finished second after taking a wrong turn after being directed off the course by a race official. ``That was just another race,'' Hernandez said. ``My first goal was for the team to win a title. I feel really good about winning the team title. I did not care about myself.'' The Moorpark women, paced by Bridget Roy (20:21) and Katie Scherrei (20:31) who placed 36th and 52nd in the 5,000-meter race, finished ninth in the team competition with 292 points. Tricia Helton (20:54), Emma Middlebrook (20:59) and Abby Vergara (21:34) rounded out the Raiders' scoring in 73rd, 77th and 105th.
