Mexican holiday commemorating the Mexican victory over the French at Puebla in 1862. The French army, better-equipped and far larger than the Mexican army, had been sent by Napoleon III to conquer Mexico.

Thirty-six blocks were covered with 3,000 feet of papel picado - handmade designs made out of colorful, cut-up tissue paper.

``It's actually a pleasure to be here in downtown Los Angeles to see all different types of people,'' said Steve Esquivel. ``It's all reasonably priced, and everybody's just having a good time.''

Underneath the rainbow of paper, hundreds of thousands of people attended the ninth annual AT&T Fiesta Broadway celebration to commemorate May 5, 1862, when Mexican troops defeated French invaders at the Battle of Puebla Noun 1. Six concert stages featured popular acts, including salsa singer Celia Cruz, Grammy-nominated singer and actress Chayanne, and the Grammy-winning group La Mafia.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, 18-year-old singer Nydia Rojas entertained a crowd of people with the traditional Mexican songs she has been singing since she was 10.

``I'm proud to be who I am, to be Mexican and Cuban and be born in the United States,'' Rojas said. ``It's just a wonderful feeling to see all those people out there, especially the kids.''

At Los Ninos Play Park, the Los Angeles Circus gave three performances featuring jugglers, acrobats, aerialists and a bilingual master of ceremonies.

Volunteers at the Health Expo Park offered free services such as blood-pressure tests, HIV HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), either of two closely related retroviruses that invade T-helper lymphocytes and are responsible for AIDS. There are two types of HIV: HIV-1 and HIV-2. HIV-1 is responsible for the vast majority of AIDS in the United States.  education and dental screenings.

Sports aficionados boxed and played soccer and baseball at the World Cup Sports Park, where a full-size boxing ring and mini-soccer field were constructed for participants and spectators.
