FUJITSU FIRST TO DELIVER BROADBAND ISDN SWITCH
 TO U.S. TELEPHONE COMPANY
RALEIGH, N.C., Dec. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Fujitsu Network Switching of America (FNS) today announced that it has delivered and begun installation of the first broadband ISDN switch in a U.S. central office.
This public network milestone was achieved with the delivery of the Fujitsu FETEX-150 switching system to Southern Bell's Rosemary Street central office in Chapel Hill, N.C. The FETEX-150 system, which utilizes ATM broadband switching technology, will begin providing trial services in early 1992.
"The installation is not only a milestone for a public telephone company, but also a first for any equipment vendor," said Ken Hovaldt, FNS vice president of sales and marketing. "For the purpose of these trials, we're installing the first ATM broadband switch in a U.S. central office, and we're doing it as promised, ahead of the pack, with a full range of capabilities," Hovaldt said.
The FETEX-150 switch will be providing Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) switching for a number of broadband trial applications including the VISTAnet joint field trial of advanced networking in North Carolina previously announced by BellSouth. An initial application will use advanced computer graphics to provide sophisticated medical imaging used for precision cancer treatment planning. University researchers will have switched access to a Cray supercomputer in Research Triangle Park -- some 18 miles away -- at 622 Megabits-per second.
In announcing the achievement, Hovaldt said: "The deployment of 21st century communications capabilities into the network has begun with this installation for trial at BellSouth. BellSouth is once again illustrating why they are among the leaders in this industry. We are gratified for their continued confidence as demonstrated by their choice of Fujitsu to support their commitment to test advanced switched services."
In addition to the switch, Fujitsu is providing a high-speed SONET fiber-optic transmission system. Advanced switching and transmission equipment such as this will provide untold benefits to everyone as it is applied through the public network to opportunities in education, medicine and economic development.
Fujitsu Network Switching of America, headquartered in Raleigh, is a subsidiary of Fujitsu Limited, a $21 billion global leader in integrated telecommunications systems, computers and semiconductors employing 145,000 people. In the United States, Fujitsu has more than 6,000 employees in 37 states operating over 150 facilities including seven manufacturing plants and nine R&D centers.
FNS has other FETEX-150 broadband and narrowband joint field trials in the United States planned with NYNEX and U S WEST as well. Fujitsu Network Switching plans to manufacture the FETEX-150 system in the United States initially at the new Fujitsu Telecommunications Center in Richardson, Texas, as soon as commercial sales volume is achieved.
