FSCT spring virtual learning conferences explore topic of powder coatings. The FSCT FSCT Federation of Societies for Coating Technology FSCT Fire Support Control Terminal continues its 2004 spring schedule of Virtual Learning Conferences with a two-part course on Powder Coatings Powder coating is a type of dry coating, which is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder. The main difference between a conventional liquid paint and a powder coating is that the powder coating does not require a solvent to keep the binder and filler parts in a liquid suspension . Scheduled for May 6 is "Powder Coatings I: An Introduction to Formulation and Performance." On May 13, "Powder Coatings II: The Building Blocks of a Powder Coating Formula" will be offered. Both conferences are presented by Kevin Biller bill·er n. One that bills, as: a. A clerk who prepares bills. b. A machine used in preparing bills. , vice president of operations for Jamestown Powder Coatings, Columbus, OH. These courses may be taken separately or as a series. Powder Coatings I: An Introduction to Formulation and Performance Thursday, May 6, 2:00-3:30 pm (ET) This session covers the philosophy of the powder coating formulator, with an emphasis on balancing economy with performance. Discussions focus on the performance of the various generic types of powder coatings which will give the formulator and powder user an appreciation of which type of chemistry is best suited to meet the finisher's requirements. A systematic approach to building a powder formula is illustrated. Powder Coatings II: The Building Blocks of a Powder Coating Formula Thursday, May 13, 2:00-3:30 pm (ET) This session explores the selection of raw materials for a successful powder coating. Balancing resin/curing agent ratios and pigmentation pigmentation, name for the coloring matter found in certain plant and animal cells and for the color produced thereby. Pigmentation occurs in nearly all living organisms. dos and don'ts are highlighted, as well as choosing suitable filler fill·er 1 n. One that fills, as: a. Something added to augment weight or size or fill space. b. A composition, especially a semisolid that hardens on drying, used to fill pores, cracks, or holes in wood, plaster, pigment pigment, substance that imparts color to other materials. In paint, the pigment is a powdered substance which, when mixed in the liquid vehicle, imparts color to a painted surface. . An understanding of how to incorporate additives and their effect on performance is provided. Manufacturing principles and how process control ensures consistent quality are discussed. Learning Objectives: * Understanding resin selection for specific performance * The philosophy of formulating for economy and performance * A systematic approach to building a powder coating * How fillers effect overall performance and cost * Which pigments are most suitable for a powder coating * How to incorporate additives and their effect on performance * Manufacturing principles * Process control versus quality control Course Instructor: Kevin Biller, now vice president of operations for Jamestown Powder Coatings, began his career in powder coatings in 1978 at the Glidden Paint Company. He held various technical positions during his 15 years there including group leader--Automotive Coatings, and section leader--European Core Laboratory while he worked in Birmingham, England for Glidden's parent ICI (language) ICI - An extensible, interpretated language by Tim Long with syntax similar to C. This custom manufacturer of specialty powder coatings was sold to Jamestown Powder Coatings in December 2001. Mr. Biller has four U.S. patents in powder coating technology and has delivered numerous papers and written many articles on powder coatings.
