FROZEN STOWAWAYS; Lax security blamed after 2 boys die in jet undercarriage.
SHOCKED police hit out yesterday after two boys were found frozen to death in the undercarriage of a plane at Heathrow Airport.
The African boys, aged 12 and 14, became the latest in a tragic toll of stowaways dreaming of a better life in the West after sneaking on to a six-hour Ghana Airways flight from Accra.
A Heathrow detective said: "These boys died unnecessarily tragic deaths.
"Security at the airport in Accra is obviously not as good as it should be because there have been several deaths resulting from stowaways in Ghana in recent years.
"The boys must have been desperate to leave for whatever reason." A ground engineer found the frozen bodies in a wheel compartment of the DC-10 after he saw an arm dangling on to the tarmac.
Temperatures in aircraft undercarriage bays can fall to minus 40C because of the high altitudes.
Scotland Yard, which is trying to establish the boys' identities, said they were both "casually dressed and well nourished."
Several stowaways, mostly young men desperate to reach Britain, have died in the past year after falling from bays as planes took off or landed.
Earlier this year a 30-year-old Ghanaian was found dead after a BA flight landed at Heathrow. The West African had hidden in the plane's wheel bay.
In July a stowaway plunged thousands of feet from a jet coming in to land at Gatwick airport.
