FROM WINTER TO SUMMER, YORK INTERNATIONAL
MAKES ITS MARK AGAIN AT THE OLYMPIC GAMES
YORK, Pa., July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Following its successful involvement in the 1992 Winter Olympics, York International Corporation will be in the spotlight at the upcoming Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain.
York is supplying air conditioning equipment for all indoor Olympic events in Barcelona, plus a variety of administrative facilities. In addition, York equipment will provide cooling comfort at the renovated Barcelona Airport when Olympic athletes, sponsors and spectators arrive for the Games, set for July 25 through Aug. 9.
York is also an official sponsor of the U.S. Olympic Committee and U.S. Olympic Team in Barcelona. York held the same sponsorships at the Winter Olympics in Albertville, France.
"From our sponsorships to the air conditioning installations, we intend to show the world that York is not only a leader in our industry, but also a primary player in the international business arena," said Robert N. Pokelwaldt, York International president and chief executive officer.
In Barcelona, York systems will cool nine athletic facilities hosting a variety of events: gymnastics, basketball, judo, team handball, volleyball, tennis, swimming, hockey and other sports. York is also providing cooling for the Olympic Games information, communications and medical centers, administration buildings and Olympic Games museum. At Barcelona Airport alone, where terminal capacity has been doubled, York will provide 22 heat pumps and six commercial- capacity air conditioning systems.
All York units are being sold through Compania ROCA Radiadores, a major distributor in Barcelona, said Michael Ricci, York director of corporate marketing and communications.
"This year's Winter and Summer Games demonstrate how York is quickly becoming the dominant leader in the Olympic sports venue business," Ricci said. "Sports organizing authorities turn to York because of our long track record and ability to engineer, install, operate and maintain equipment on a turnkey basis."
For example, Ricci cited York's involvement in the recent Winter Olympics, where the company provided refrigeration for the ice skating rinks used for figure skating, ice hockey and curling. York also furnished automated snowmaking equipment for all alpine skiing events.
In addition, York is providing air conditioning and refrigeration equipment at the U.S. Olympic Training Centers in San Diego; Colorado Springs, Colo.; and Lake Placid, N.Y.
At the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway, York will engineer and build refrigeration systems for the Hunderfossen luge and bobsled track, Hamar Ice Rink and Hamar Olympia Hall, sites of events such as speedskating, figure skating, curling and short track speedskating.
"York has made a commitment that goes far beyond funding a sponsorship or supplying products and services," Pokelwaldt added. "We've demonstrated that applying a technology particular to the performance of our Olympic athletes can have substantial benefits."
York International Corporation, a world leader in heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems, serves residential, industrial, institutional and commercial markets.
