Left-side trees can be a problem off the tee, and the left-side rough is thick near a slightly elevated green. Any approach shot pushed right flirts with trees and possibly a lake that spans the adjacent 12th hole. Although No. 7 is the shortest of Los Robles' three longest par-4s, this hole is rated the toughest on the course.

BOOK REVIEW

The Nicklaus Way

By John Andrisani

Published by HarperResource, an imprint of HarperCollins/Publishers (www.harpercollins.com)

Longtime Golf Magazine writer Andrisani fills out a strong foursome with this how-to edition that examines the strategies and techniques of a golfer many regard as the best ever to play the game.

As he did in ``The Bobby Jones Way,'' as well as ``The Hogan Way'' and ``The Tiger Woods Editing of this page by unregistered or newly registered users is currently disabled.  Way,'' Andrisani traces Nicklaus' success from his youth - in the Golden Bear's case, going back to his work with Scioto Country Club Scioto Country Club, is a private country club and golf course in Columbus, Ohio. The course, designed by Donald Ross, opened in 1916 and since then has hosted five PGA tournaments throughout its history, including two majors.  professional Jack Grout Grout

Good enough a golfer to win the World Golf Writers Championship and good enough a writer to have been Golf Magazine senior editor of instruction, Andrisani also has a background as a golf instructor and interviewed other instructors in pursuit of giving his readers a better understanding of the powerful Nicklaus swing.

Impeccable course management, perhaps as important a reason Nicklaus won a record 18 professional majors, also is examined in this 140-page softback edition, which includes chapters on shot-making, good habits and the mental strength of a man Golf Magazine named Golfer of the Century and who Andrisani calls ``probably the smartest approach player ever.''
