So as the first year of the new millennium winds down to a close, it is worth taking the time to look back at some of what the Chamber achieved for its members and for the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, business community. The year 2000 was one of continued progress for the Chamber in many areas, particularly legislative advocacy. A great victory was achieved in helping to secure congressional approval of Permanent Normalization In relational database management, a process that breaks down data into record groups for efficient processing. There are six stages. By the third stage (third normal form), data are identified only by the key field in their record. of Trade Relations with China. Chamber leaders also worked with Gov. Gray Davis and his staff on legislation of concern to L.A.-area business interests. Gov. Davis personally reviewed the legislation and eventually vetoed many of the bills the Chamber lobbied against and signed several the Chamber supported (see page 8 for more details). As the Southern California business environment becomes more focused on emerging high-tech and new media enterprises, the Chamber is adapting to the interests of the Tech Coast. This year, the Chamber created the New Media and Technology Committee, which will focus on business development, networking, advocacy and community efforts within the industry. In October, the Chamber sponsored the first annual Technology Leadership Awards with the Los Angeles Business Journal to showcase the best of Tech Coast companies (see story below). As the Chamber sets its sights on goals for 2001, we must continue to work with other area business organizations to provide seamless support that will help provide enabling infrastructure, information and advocacy for businesses to succeed. During my tenure as Chairman, I have relished the chance to serve the Chamber membership. I wish our incoming Chairman Charlie Woo all the best as he prepares to take on the challenges and opportunities of 2001.
