 will soon become the city's largest transitional housing complex for battered women and their children.

Work will start today on the $1.15 million renovation of the complex, which was purchased for $885,000 by Haven Hills Inc. The project is being financed with a city Housing Department loan, earthquake rehabilitation rehabilitation: see physical therapy.  funds and tax credits.

 to run and maintain the facility for 20 years, said Betty Fisher, the organization's executive director.

"For years, women leaving our shelter told us they needed more time to get their lives together," Fisher said. "This will give them help to break the cycle of violence.

"Some women have ended up going back to the batterer for a place to stay, others end up living in their cars."

Instead of a 30-day stay now allowed in their crisis shelter, some women and their children will be housed in the new facility for 18 months.

Besides shelter, also provided on site will be child care, job training and counseling, Fisher said. The crisis shelter, at a different location, will be maintained as well, Fisher said.
