Byline: Evan Henerson Staff Writer

Musical pioneers, Hollywood musical scores and a refurbished Muse of Music statue will be on the bill of fare for the 2006 summer season at the Hollywood Bowl The Hollywood Bowl is a modern amphitheatre at 2301 North Highland Avenue in Hollywood, California, USA, that is used primarily for music performances. The "bowl" in this context is the natural cavity in the earth into which the amphitheater is built, rather than the shape of the , which will also be John Mauceri's farewell as conductor of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra.

On the drama front, the Bowl will offer a staged reading of Billy Wilder's ``Sunset Boulevard Sunset Boulevard is a street in the western part of Los Angeles County, California, that stretches from Figueroa Street in downtown Los Angeles to the Pacific Coast Highway at the Pacific Ocean in the Pacific Palisades. ,'' accompanied by the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra playing Franz Waxman's score. The Bowl's annual staged musical - Rodgers and Hammerstein's ``The Sound of Music'' - will, for the first time, play three weekend performances instead of the customary one.

The cinema is also well represented through the movie music of John Williams (Sept. 1 and 2) and the American Film Institute's rundown of Hollywood's top 25 movie musicals (Sept. 3). The Great American Concert (Aug. 18 and 19) will feature selections from Walt Disney's ``Fantasia fantasia (făntā`zhə) [Ital.,=fancy], musical composition not restricted to a formal design, but constructed freely in the manner of an improvisation. Mauceri, who turned 60 and conducted his 300th concert with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra during the 2005 season, said the time was ripe for a transition. Assuming the title of founding director next season, Mauceri will be invited back on a regular basis, and he noted, ``I won't really be going away.''

The tributes to Mauceri throughout the season include the Sept. 15-17 weekend fireworks fireworks: see pyrotechnics.

Returning for second tours of duty are Leonard Slatkin, sporting the unwieldy title of principal guest conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl; and Christian McBride, the Bowl's creative chair for jazz. McBride performs with his band and saxophonist Joshua Redman on Aug. 9, and will be part of the James Brown celebration on Sept. 6.

The Bowl, which underwent significant upgrades to its shell in 2004, will showcase the restored statue and fountain, the Muse of Music. The 1940 statue - whose designer George Stanley is also credited with creating the Oscar statuette design - sits at the Bowl's entrance at Hollywood Bowl Way and Highland Avenue.
