Byline: Dave McNary Daily News Staff Writer

Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck Daffy Duck is an animated cartoon character in the Warner Brothers Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies series of cartoons. Daffy was the first of the new breed of "screwball" characters that emerged in the 1930s to supplant traditional everyman characters, such as  may be pitching Doritos soon.

Bugs Bunny and his associates have become significantly more visible in recent years, starting with the 1991 founding of the Warner Studio Stores chain and its expansion to 170 outlets as a challenge to Walt Disney Co.'s dominance in cartoon character merchandise. Disney opened its first store in 1987 in Glendale and now operates more than 600.

``Warner has been very astute at expanding these characters, which had been gathering dust for years,'' said Michael Schau, editor of the New York-based Entertainment Marketing Letter. ``Disney is just off the map but Warner has also realized that they've got an incredible franchise and they're starting to exploit it.''

Schau also said Warner is in no danger currently of overexposing the characters and should be able to sign more deals similar to the Frito-Lay agreement. ``Animated characters always behave for advertisers - they show up on time and they don't get involved in lawsuits,'' he said.

Warner is part of Time Warner Inc. while Frito-Lay is a subsidiary of PespiCo Inc., which has announced plans to sell off its restaurant chains to focus on soft drinks and snacks.
