FRIGID STORM LEAVES SOUTHLAND SHIVERING.

Byline: Dominic Berbeo Staff Writer

A Pacific Northwest storm dumped half an inch of rain across the Los Angeles basin The Los Angeles Basin is the coastal sediment-filled plain located between the peninsular and transverse ranges in southern California in the United States containing the central part of the city of Los Angeles as well as its southern and southeastern suburbs (both in Los Angeles  and a thick blanket of snow in the mountains Friday, and forecasters predicted it would leave chilly temperatures as it breaks up this morning.

Heavy snowfall was good for skiers, with Friday's storm dropping 12 inches of snow on Mount Baldy Mount Baldy or Baldy Mountain may refer to:

High temperatures in the Valley regions were expected to be in the upper-50s today, with overnight lows dipping into the mid-30s, forecasters say, with partly cloudy skies until Monday, when Los Angeles can expect sunshine.

And as the snow level dropped to below 2,500 feet in Southern California on Friday, even the peaks of some local areas like Oat Mountain and Agua Dulce turned white with snow.

But although the rain was welcome in the dry Southland, it ratcheted up the number of fender benders on the highway, snarling snarl 1

traffic in the early morning rush hour Friday.

According to the California Highway Patrol, there were 134 crashes on freeways in the Los Angeles area during the 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. commute, compared with 58 during the same period last Friday. There were no serious injuries in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

And with snow-peaked Santa Susana foothills in the background overlooking the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys, not everyone was thrilled with the wet weather.

``It's bad enough taking the bus as it is,'' said Ronaldo Trujillo, waiting for public transportation in Canoga Park. ``You get wet out here. There's no shelter.''

And although this exceptionally wet month of January has dropped 5.9 inches of rain on the Southland, twice the normal 2.37, the season-to-date totals are still slightly behind normal, said Ray Tanabe, a National Weather Service meteorologist.

Since July 1, when the rain season began, 7.09 inches of rain have fallen on Los Angeles, compared to a normal season's 7.3 inches to date.

``We're about halfway there,'' Tanabe said. ``The total season is about 14.7 and we just might catch up.''

Friday's storm system, which originated in the Gulf of Alaska Noun 1. Gulf of Alaska - a gulf of the Pacific Ocean between the Alaska Peninsula and the Alexander Archipelago
