FRIGHTFULLY DELIGHTFUL SAFETY REIGNS ON HALLOWEEN.

Byline: Staff and Wire Services

People of all ages went out into the streets and to special parties determined to have a good time Wednesday night, but parents watched their children with special care on a Halloween played out in the shadow of terrorism.

Some youths participated in another long-standing Halloween tradition - trick or treating for UNICEF UNICEF (y`nĭsĕf'), the United Nations Children's Fund, an affiliated agency of the United Nations. .

The United Nations children's welfare organization reported a spike in the number of collection boxes requested nationwide this year - 20 percent more than were requested in 2000, UNICEF officials said Wednesday.

The jump was largely attributed to fears over the safety of Halloween candy, and also to an increased awareness of the importance of charitable acts since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

In fact, for the first time this year, UNICEF is funneling all of its Halloween proceeds to one group, the children of Afghanistan.
