FRIENDS, FAMILY MOURN TEEN-AGER.

Byline: Lisa Van Proyen Daily News Staff Writer

Jon Yee's mother had warned him about buying a motorcycle, but she couldn't stand in his way. And besides, she said, he loved to ride so much.

On Thursday, she mourned the death of her 18-year-old son. The former Calabasas High School Calabasas High School is a four-year high school, freshman-senior, in Calabasas, California, United States.

``He hadn't had it but a few months. I didn't want him to get a motorcycle. But it was his decision,'' his mother, Mary Blank said.

``He was my sunshine. When he entered a room, it was with a smile. He was never without a smile,'' said his mother, surrounded by her son's friends.

Dozens of Calabasas High School students and other teen-agers gathered at Yee's home Thursday and built a memorial at the scene of the crash.

``I'm still waiting for him to walk in through the door and say, What are you doing?'' said Yee's friend Tom Lookabill as he sat in Yee's living room.

``Speed's the cause,'' Evans said. ``He was not familiar enough with the bike.''

Yee, a 1998 graduate of Calabasas High School, had a passion for exploring new places on his motorcycle.

``He said, you feel so free when you're riding with the breeze in your face,'' his mother recalled.

Yee's friends, family and teachers recalled his smile and selflessness.

His high school tennis coach, Bob Holycross, said Yee was well-loved on the team.

``He's really one of the finest young men I've ever coached in college and high school in 27 years,'' Holycross said.

``He was easy to get along with and was a great competitor. He knew how to compete, and afterwards he was friends with people. Some of the kids compete well, but they carry it off the court with them. Jon didn't,'' Holycross said.
