FRETTER RESPONDS TO MONTGOMERY WARD SUIT
 WITH A COUNTER-COMPLAINT AGAINST WARDS
SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Dec. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The following was released today by Fretter, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: FTTR):
In response to a lawsuit filed by Montgomery Ward & Co., Fretter is finalizing a Counter-Complaint against Wards. In the Counter-Complaint, Fretter sues Wards for slander, libel, defamation and tortious interference with prospective economic advantage. Wards has sued Fretter contending that Fretter mischaracterized Wards' prices and the price differential between Fretter's prices and those of Wards. Wards has also stated that a Fretter shopper in a Wards store refused to pay a discounted price for merchandise and demanded to pay a higher price.
Fretter believes that Wards' allegations are false and baseless. Fretter will vigorously defend itself and prosecute its claims against Wards. At the inception of Fretter's comparison advertising campaign approximately 18 months ago, Fretter implemented controls to assure the accuracy of its advertisements. Such controls have been tested in the courts and Fretter has been vindicated. Such controls were in place in all phases of Fretter's purchases of products from Wards. Fretter welcomes the scrutiny of the courts of its advertising campaign.
Fretter's advertisements comparing its lower prices to the higher prices of Wards on the specifically delineated products are truthful, accurate in all respects and provide consumers valuable information to assist them in making informed purchase decisions.
