FRESNO ST.SWEEPS MATADORS : PARKER HAS SHUTOUT IN FIRST OF VICTORIES FRESNO STATE 1-3, CSUN 0-1.

Byline: Kevin Acee Daily News Staff Writer

Lindsay Parker experienced just about the worst that can happen to a pitcher in Division I softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. So the Fresno State freshman wasn't about to freak when Cal State Northridge led off with a double in three consecutive innings on Friday.

Instead, she was thinking, ``Give me a break.''

Northridge did give Parker a break. And she did not allow them much room for error.

The combination meant Parker, a graduate of La Canada High School, shut the fifth-ranked Matadors out in the first game of a doubleheader, keeping her record perfect as her team scored on three hits in the sixth inning in·ning

In the second game, Northridge allowed two unearned runs in the fifth inning and lost 3-1 on its home field.

With the sweep, No. 4 Fresno State (28-6, 7-1) moved into first place in the Western Athletic Conference The Western Athletic Conference (commonly referred to as the WAC, pronounced "wack") was formed on July 27, 1962, making it the sixth oldest of the 11 college athletic conferences currently participating in the NCAA's Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS; formerly , a game ahead of the Matadors (26-8, 6-2). Northridge, which has lost four straight after winning 16 in a row, will likely have to be perfect the rest of the season - including a sweep at Fresno on May 4 - in order to win its fourth consecutive WAC WAC (Women's Army Corps), U.S. army organization created (1942) during World War II to enlist women as auxiliaries for noncombatant duty in the U.S. army. Northridge had plenty of opportunity in the first game.

Scia Maumausolo led off the fourth inning with a double but was remained at second when the third out was called three batters later. Jeanne Pray led off the fifth with a double but was there three batters later when the third out was called. In the sixth, Jamie Herrington led off with a double. But Parker struck out Maumausolo, then after Lopez singled, Herrington got picked off between third and home. Lopez made it all the way to third before the third out was made.

``We didn't have the key hits,'' Matadors coach Janet Sherman said.

They did not have them, at least partially, because Parker (10-0) was on.

``She adjusted and we didn't,'' Sherman said.

1995: Northridge won three of four, including a 3-1 victory at Fresno on May 5 that secured the WAC title that Fresno was favored to win.

1996: Fresno, again the preseason favorite, beat Northridge 2-1 in the PONY tournament last month and swept the Matadors on Friday in two WAC games. Most likely, Northridge will have to sweep the Bulldogs when they play two there on May 4.
