USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  coach Paul Hackett has started billing the Trojans as a fourth- quarter team.

Maybe it's because he waited nearly that long to let freshman quarterback Carson Palmer Carson Palmer (born December 27, 1979 in Fresno, California), is an American football quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals of the National Football League. He attended the University of Southern California, where he won the Heisman Trophy Award in 2002 in his senior season.  take his first snap Saturday.

With a Coliseum crowd of 56,093 already booing the offense, Hackett finally inserted Palmer into the game late in the third quarter against Arizona State.

The belated move paid off. Palmer immediately re-ignited the crowd, threw a touchdown pass and helped spark his teammates into a 22-point fourth-quarter blitz that enabled the Trojans to defeat Arizona State 35-24.

``It's just Carson. You guys hear the crowd. He makes something happen,'' wide receiver R. Jay Soward Rodney (R.) Jay Soward (born January 16, 1978 in Rialto, California) is a football player who most recently played for the CFL's Toronto Argonauts as a wide receiver. College career

Can a quarterback controversy be far behind?

No. Hackett insisted sophomore Mike Van Raaphorst will start next week against California. But the two-quarterback system seems entrenched en·trench   also in·trench

24-13 with only minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Palmer's performance, combined with another tireless effort by the defense and clutch plays by USC's special teams, helped the Trojans (4-1, 2-0) avert a disastrous defeat.

``That qualifies as a big win in my book,'' Hackett said. ``At halftime, I said, `If there's ever a time to play our best football, it's time It's Time was a successful political campaign run by the Australian Labor Party (ALP) under Gough Whitlam at the 1972 election in Australia. That was hardly the picture for three quarters, even though USC linebacker Chris Claiborne Christopher Ashone Claiborne (born July 26, 1978 in San Diego) is an American football linebacker who is currently a free agent. Professional Career
Previously, Claiborne played for the Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings, St. Louis Rams, and the New York Giants.
knocked Arizona State quarterback Ryan Kealy out of the game with a mild concussion on the game's third play.

Kealy never returned, but even with reserve Chad Elliott, the Sun Devils were rolling right through the Trojans, as running back J.R. Redmond rushed for a career-high 214 yards on 33 carries. Redmond finished with a school-record 350 yards of total offense.

With Redmond running wild and Elliott completing just enough passes, the Sun Devils seemed to take command after Redmond's 2-yard run gave them a 24-13 lead with 5:03 left in the third.

Enter Palmer, finally. Maybe Hackett heard the boos on the previous possession, when USC went three-and-out under Van Raaphorst.

Palmer drove the Trojans 62 yards, highlighted by a 20-yard touchdown pass to Soward in the corner of the end zone. Palmer called an audible on the play, electing to go for Soward after watching Arizona State's safeties move closer to the line of scrimmage line of scrimmage

``I told him in the huddle. Let's run the fade,'' Soward said.

``I went to his house and had a talk with him this week. The past two weeks, we haven't done anything offensively. I said, `If you want to play, you have to make something happen.' ''

But Soward turned diplomatic when asked if Palmer should be USC's starter.

``I'm not endorsing him as the starter. Maybe coach will,'' he said.

THE HERO

USC quarterback Carson Palmer. The true freshman True freshman is a term used in NCAA sports, indicating that an athlete is playing the sport in his first year of college, rather than redshirting for one or more years to protect future college eligibility.  energized the Trojans and the crowd with his entrance in the third quarter. Palmer threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to R. Jay Soward that cut Arizona State's lead to 24-21 and halted the Sun Devils' momentum.

THE GOAT

Arizona State coach Bruce Snyder Bruce Snyder (born March 14, 1940 in Santa Monica, California) was the head football coach of Utah State University from 1976 to 1982. He was the head football coach of the University of California from 1987 to 1991. . Trailing 35-24 with four minutes remaining, the Sun Devils faced fourth-and-goal at the USC 5-yard line. Instead of kicking a field goal, Snyder went for it, and backup quarterback Chad Elliott threw an incomplete pass An incomplete pass is a term in American football which means that a legal forward pass hits the ground before a player on either team gains possession. For example, if the quarterback throws the ball to one of his wide receivers, and the receiver either does not touch it, or tries  to Tariq McDonald.

NOTEBOOK: USC's Matock breaks his ankle, is lost for season

Defensive tackle Marc Matock will undergo surgery today at USC University Hospital, after breaking his left ankle in the second half against Arizona State.

Matock said he will be out at least two months and hopes to return if the Trojans advance to a bowl game. The surgery will be performed by Dr. James Tibone.

``I beat (Arizona State center) Grey Ruegamer Christopher Grey Ruegamer (born June 1, 1976 in Scottsdale, Arizona) is an American football player who currently plays center in the NFL for the New York Giants. On April 3, 2006, the New York Giants signed Ruegamer to a 1-year, $750,000 contract.  and I was going after the quarterback, and Ruegamer came back and dove at my ankle,'' Matock said. ``It snapped. I knew it was broken on the field. I heard it. I'm not going to say he intentionally did it.''

Matock said he broke a small bone in his ankle, and that a plate will be inserted during today's surgical procedure.

``It's tough,'' Matock said. ``Especially in terms of playing at the next level. I still feel like I'm going to come back at the end of the season.''

Defensive line coach Ed Orgeron Ed Orgeron (born July 27, 1961) is the head football coach at the University of Mississippi. Off to the concert: Hackett was in a hurry to leave the Coliseum after the game. He dashed off to the Greek Theatre, where he attended the Legends of Rock 'N Roll concert.

New look line: In a show of solidarity, offensive linemen Travis Claridge, Matt McShane and Jason Grain all dyed their hair blonde for the game. It didn't seem to help much, because the Trojans gave up five sacks.

Maybe it's because tackles Matt Welch and Brent McCaffrey didn't go along with the dye jobs.

Big game for Davis: USC defensive tackle Ennis Davis of Reseda had one of the best games of his career. Davis blocked a field goal, forced a fumble and had six tackles.

Wide receiver Larry Parker also had a memorable game, with five receptions for a career-high 105 yards.

Redmond sets mark: Arizona State tailback J.R. Redmond (214 yards) is the eighth player to rush for more than 200 yards against USC and just the third to do it at the Coliseum.
