FRESH OFF `VIRGINIAN,' PULLMAN RACKS UP THE `NUMBERS'.

Byline: Marilyn Beck & Stacy Jenel Smith

Bill Pullman Pullman.

is getting good advance response to ``The Virginian,'' his first movie as both director and star. He's relieved about that, especially since he expected to have the upcoming TNT TNT: see trinitrotoluene.

flick completed in October - but wound up finishing it less than two weeks ago.

``I'd never gone through post-production like this. It was overwhelming - rewarding, and a total time consumer,'' admits the star of ``Independence Day'' and ``While You Were Sleeping.''

Pullman had been scheduled to make the historical film ``Tracker'' this fall, but now says, ``Thank God that one didn't happen.''

Even without ``Tracker,'' he has a full agenda. Next month, he'll join John Travolta and Lisa Kudrow Lisa Marie Diane Kudrow (born July 30, 1963) is an Emmy Award- and SAG-winning American actress best known for her role as Phoebe Buffay in the hugely popular sitcom Friends.  in Nora Ephron's big-screen ``Numbers.'' It is, he says, ``a true story of a weatherman who rigged the lottery on his own station so he could win.'' Pullman will play the cop who stumbles on to the scheme. Following that assignment, Bill will go immediately into the action-thriller ``Kingdom Come.''

He's justifiably proud of having directed ``The Virginian,'' which, with a charming love story between his character and Diane Lane's, turned out to be a real winner. Still, he's not in a rush to jump back behind the cameras. ``In a way, the whole experience got me more excited about what I want to do as an actor.''

Still in Saigon

``JAG'' departs from its norm - and then some - in its Christmas-themed episode Dec. 14. It takes place in 1969 aboard an aircraft carrier off Vietnam, with all the ``JAG'' actors playing different roles. ``It's a tribute to all the people who served and died in Vietnam. . . . They're using stock footage of Bob Hope entertaining. . . . It's going to be quite a really big episode,'' says Aussie actor Trevor Goddard, who usually plays Australian officer Mic Brumby brumby

Goddard's down-under diction certainly isn't hindering his career momentum. The former boxer, who recently wrapped a role in Jerry Bruckheimer's ``Gone in 60 Seconds'' with Nicolas Cage, reveals there's a third installment of the big-screen ``Mortal Kombat'' en route to production. ``It involves my character, Kano, which is rather nice.'' He's also wanted for a gangster-movie set in Australia come hiatus time. How he might be able to juggle his schedule to accommodate it all, he doesn't know, but as he puts it, ``you just gotta can your chickens when you get 'em.''

She was a series regular in Seasons 2-3, appeared in several episodes at the beginning and end of season 4, and was a special , who co-stars in the feature with Mia Kirshner and Dominique Swain, tells this column that her role - as a popular, coke-sniffing college coed - is unlike anything she's ever done. Says Meredith, ``We focus on the time in Laura Ingalls Wilder's life from ages 16 to 22, when she was a woman coming into her own.''

Meredith, who's 22, continues to share her life with her guy, Steve. She prefers not to mention the last name of the massage therapist she met more than three years ago, and says they have no plans for marriage, as yet. She has said on more than one occasion that she's found the man she loves.
