FRENCH BROAD EMC LINEMAN WINS CO-OP POLE-TOP RESCUE COMPETITION

RALEIGH, N.C., Oct. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Alan Grooms of French Broad Electric Membership Corporation, Marshall, won first place honors in the 1992 Carolina Electric Cooperatives Pole-top Rescue Competition Monday.
Grooms, who has been with the EMC for nine years, won the $500 cash prize by beating out 21 fellow co-op linemen. He completed the simulated rescue exercise in 2 minutes, 2.91 seconds.
Grooms edged out four other contenders who had finished in the top five in previous contests. Among them were the reigning champion, Ernest Chavis of Lumbee River EMC, Red Springs. Chavis, who finished third with a time of 2 minutes, 7.43 seconds, won the title in 1989 and in 1991.
Paul Quillen of Carteret-Craven Electric Cooperative, Morehead City, maintained his lock on the No. 2 spot with a time of 2 minutes, 6.65 seconds. He finished second in the 1991 contest after taking the No. 3 spot in 1989.
All the contestants earned an opportunity to compete in the statewide elimination by winning a local contest at co-ops throughout the state. Each of the state's 28 co-ops participated in the program.
Also winning cash awards by finishing among the top five were Reno Coleman of Brunswick EMC, Shallotte, who was a winner in 1989 and in 1991, and Randy Smith of Union EMC, Monroe, the 1987 champion who was also one of the top five in 1989 and 1991.
Coleman completed Monday's exercise in 2 minutes, 8.94 seconds; Smith, in 2 minutes, 21.41 seconds.
In each competition, participants were required to radio an emergency call from a bucket truck, put on climbing gear and a tool belt, climb a 35-foot pole, lower a 105-pound dummy to safety and perform life-saving procedures. Judges selected the winners on the basis of their speed and adherence to safety rules.
Carolina Electric Cooperatives, which sponsors the biennial contest, is the network of electric cooperative organizations that provide reliable, safe and affordable electric service to 600,000 homes, farms and businesses in North Carolina. At the heart of Carolina Electric Cooperatives are the state's 28 EMCs, each member-owned, not-for-profit and overseen by a board of directors elected by the membership.
