Witnesses told the CHP that Rote may have been speeding, Myers said. ``This may be a case where seat belts saved lives,'' Myers said. ``Without seat belts, the driver of the Ford F-150 would have definitely been ejected, and without seat belts, the driver and the passengers in the Yukon may have had serious problems.'' Southbound lanes of the Ventura Freeway were closed west of the Conejo Grade for about 2 1/2 hours Friday morning while police and paramedics treated the injured and cleared away the wreckage, officials said.
