FREEWAY CLOSED BY PICKUP CRASH CHP: SEAT BELTS SAVED SEVERAL LIVES.

Byline: Josh Kleinbaum Staff Writer

CAMARILLO - Two drivers were hospitalized Friday and the southbound Ventura Freeway The Ventura Freeway is a freeway in southern California running from Ventura to Pasadena. It is the principal east-west route through Ventura County and in the southern San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles County.  closed after a pileup triggered by a speeding pickup that flipped over the center divider, officials said.

Karen Rote, 45, of Camarillo suffered a broken collarbone colĀ·larĀ·bone

and head injuries when her northbound Ford F-150 pickup truck clipped a 2004 Peterbilt Box Van, smashed into the center divider and flipped over into oncoming traffic just south of Santa Rosa Santa Rosa, city, Argentina

Officer George Myers said. Rote had to be extracted from the crushed pickup using a hydraulic pry tool.

``From the damage to the vehicle, it's pretty amazing nobody died,'' Myers said. ``Just goes to show you the way they construct vehicles today, and what can happen when people wear the proper restraints.''

Everyone involved in the crash was wearing a seat belt, Myers said.

Dawn Diaz, the driver of the Yukon, was transported to St. John's Regional Medical Center St. John's Regional Medical Center may refer to:

in Oxnard, along with two passengers in her car, Myers said. Diaz, 36, of Ventura was admitted to the hospital with head injuries, Myers said. The two passengers were treated for minor injuries and released.

Witnesses told the CHP that Rote may have been speeding, Myers said.

``This may be a case where seat belts saved lives,'' Myers said. ``Without seat belts, the driver of the Ford F-150 would have definitely been ejected, and without seat belts, the driver and the passengers in the Yukon may have had serious problems.''

Southbound lanes of the Ventura Freeway were closed west of the Conejo Grade for about 2 1/2 hours Friday morning while police and paramedics treated the injured and cleared away the wreckage, officials said.
