FREE DRUG-FREE WORKPLACE SEMINAR SPONSORED BY CALIFORNIA INSURANCE BROKER

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Cooper & Cook Insurance Services, a Bay Area insurance broker seeking ways to address the Workers' Compensation crisis in California, is sponsoring a free half- day seminar, on Nov. 3, examining the advantages of maintaining a drug- free workplace for California employers. The seminar is open to all employers, regardless of the size of their workforce. The program will be presented by the Partnership for a Drug-Free Workplace, and will feature presentations by the Drug Enforcement Administration.
The seminar, including a free continental breakfast, will be from 8-11:30 a.m. at the Castlewood Country Club in Pleasanton, Calif. Interested employers can enter their free reservations by calling 510-463-7823 or faxing their name(s) and address to 510-463-3784.
"Since the Department of Transportation first required private- sector employers to implement workplace drug testing programs in 1988," said Don Cooper, president of Cooper & Cook (Pleasanton), "we've been seeing data indicating that those employers reduce their workers' compensation claims by tremendous percentages."
Government studies have shown that drug-using workers file 500 percent more workers' compensation claims, have 360 percent more accidents, use triple the medical benefits and are one-third less productive than their non-abusing co-workers.
"At first we thought that the data, based upon reports from a relatively small number of employers, was unreliable. But now, with the tremendous amount of data available, and millions of employees drug- tested, there is no longer any question that a quality drug-free workplace program will substantially reduce workers' compensation costs. Additionally, most employers who implement drug-free workplace programs also enjoy substantial reductions in workplace accidents, medical benefits usage, deaths, absenteeism, tardiness and theft," said Cooper. "It's not uncommon for employers to save up to 10 or 20 times the cost of their programs," he added.
"Once we became convinced of the validity of this data, it became obvious that it was important for other employers, many of whom knew little about the subject, to become aware of the benefits available to them from starting such a program," said Cooper.
"That's when we decided to sponsor a free seminar on the subject," Cooper explained.
